Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay explaining why you prefer online (paper) reading to paper (online) reading. You should write at least 150 words but no more than200 words.

With mobile phones widely used in our daily lives, various Apps emerge. Reading has therefore become more convenient. However, different people hold different views toward online reading.

Though more convenient reading becomes, I like paper reading more than online reading. The reasons are as follows. Firstly, I cherish the moment keeping company with the book. When I bury my head into the book, the special fragrance of the book slips through my fingers, into my nose, then into my brain. How marvelous the feeling is! Secondly, I can take various notes on the book as long as I want to, which is not that easy to do when reading online. When I have finished reading the book, what I harvest will be not only the knowledge and idea the book conveys, but also my systematic thinking about the book, which can be vividly embodied by my notes on the book. Thirdly, paper reading won’t be distracted easily by irrelevant information which often emerges in online reading.

Based on the above three points, I prefer paper reading to online reading.

Write an essay based on the following drawing. In your essay, you should:

1) describe the drawing briefly,

2) explain its intended meaning, and then

3) give your comments.

You should write on ANSWER SHEET 2.

範文:

This cartoon displays a very soothing scene. An old lady bought some stuff from a convenience store, and just at the moment when she was about to leave, the store keeper ran out to her because she had paid an extra two yuan. Though that is not a big amount of money, I believe the old lady must be greatly impressed by the keeper’s honesty.

It is without doubt that the cartoon aims at addressing a serious problem prevailing in today’s society, that is, the lack honesty in the field of business. For instance, many businessmen are so obsessed with making profit that they simply forget that they are supposed to serve the people with best products and services. Therefore, there emerge fake products, cheating services and unfulfilled promises. In contrast, the kind-hearted keeper of this drawing practices honesty in every detail of her work. Her attitude gives customer the sense that her product and service are of first-class quality, which would guarantee her more customersand credit.

The store keeper’s practice is exactly what we should advocate among all businesses. That is because, honesty not only renders clients temporary satisfaction, but can also build long-term customer trust. The latter is one of the key factors for market expansion and business success.

Universities provide students with an environment in which to learn, mature and began to realize their potential. While some students maintain a rigid, singular focus on their studies —— the next exam, essay or assignment —— others engage in a variety of extracurricular activities out side the classroom. Participation in such activities can greatly benefit students in their academic studies, chosen careers, and future life.

The most immediate benefit of extracurricular activities is to the participants’ studies. Spending an appropriate amount of time participating in sports, clubs or volunteer work can actually be an excellent way for students to relieve everyday stress. Students who are less stressed out will naturally be happier and healthier. In turn, they will be able to work more efficiently and effectively in their studies and attain better results. In addition, participation in extracurricular activities will also assist university students in their careers after graduation. Increasingly, employers seeking job applicants are not interested solely in students with a high GPA. Many companies also consider involvement in other activities when assessing which applicants are most qualified for the position because extracurricular activities also enable students to improve their communication, leadership and teamwork skills, which are important skills that they will need to succeed in their careers. Last but not least, students who take part in activities after school will learn how to live a more balanced and fulfilling life. As the saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” In other words, those who do noting else but work or study all day will become bored, uninspired, and apathetic towards life. Extracurricular activities can give students a greater appreciation for sports, hobbies and community service, and help them become healthier and more well-rounded individuals.

While academics are obviously important, it is neither necessary or advisable for students to spend on hundred percent of their time on their books. University students who devote some of their time and energy to extracurricular activities will be doing a service to their studies, their careers, and even their future life.

Honesty is regarded as a virtue by most, if not all, of the world’s cultures and religions. Many of us, if asked to enumerate the qualities we seek in a friend or a partner, would place honesty at the top of the list. In reality, many people seem to think that being honest is for others and not for themselves. However, I believe that, given the negative consequences of lying and deception, practicing honesty is in our own best interest.

For one thing, being dishonest can have serious side-effects on our mental health. Dishonest people even if they have not yet been “found out”, are likely to carry guilt and shame inside them. This is because, although lying is an immoral, most liars still have a conscience deep down inside. For another thing, those who misleads or lie to others are bound to be caught sooner or later. Indeed, people may get away with lying once or even several times. However, the one time that they get caught could entail great loss, or even spell their downfall. Depending on the nature of deception, having one’s lies could mean losing one’s job, being deserted by friends and family, or even spending time in jail.

Generally speaking, while it may be impossible to eliminate the deceit that exists around us, each of us can decide whether, and to what extent, to practice truthfulness ourselves. Considering the adverse influence that lying can have—— including destroying our mental heath and , ultimately, causing us to suffer great loss—— it is apparent that honesty is our only viable option.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay based on the picture below. You should start your essay with a brief description of the picture and then give your comments. Write your essay on Answer Sheet 1. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.

China has decided to end its decades-long one-child policy. All couples are allowed to have two children. This decision has aroused much chatter—whether it is high time that China should carry out the universal two-child policy or not. As far as I am concerned, this policy is in line with China’s domestic situations.

Speaking from a macro perspective, this policy is a timely adjustment to China’s changing situations. The aging population has been posing a threat to the sustainable and healthy development of China. This policy will optimize the demographic structure, increase the labor force, ease the pressure of aging population and ensure the sustainable and healthy development of the economy and society.

Speaking from a micro one, as the odds of having a weak elderly parent and all the attendant need for physical and financial assistance have jumped many times in just one generation, this policy will bring about many benefits to the family in the long run. In spite of the fact that child rearing is anything less than an easy task, the disadvantages, such as temporarily economic burden, seem to be pale compared with the benefits. The second child, at least, will accompany his or her sibling and in the future, they will share the responsibility to support and care for their old parents
